ATC
Completes GOES-R SEISS Pre-Shipment Review
November 15, 2013
ATC has completed the development and
Pre-Shipment Review of the Flight Model 1 Space Environment In-Situ Suite (SEISS),
the first of four advanced space weather instrument suites to be launched on the
Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite - R (GOES-R) Series starting
in early 2016. The GOES-R Series Program is a joint NOAA and NASA acquisition
and development program.
The GOES-R satellite will be the first in a series of
four advanced weather satellites (GOES-R, S, T, U) that will significantly enhance
weather tracking and forecasting, and provide advanced, early warning of impending
severe weather and hurricane events, and their monitoring and tracking. The
ATC-developed GOES-R SEISS Suite will significantly enhance solar and space weather
detection and monitoring. It consists of the Energetic Heavy Ion Sensor (EHIS),
the High and Low Magnetospheric Particle Sensors (MPS-HI and MPS-LO), two Solar
and Galactic Proton Sensor (SGPS) Instruments and the Data Processing Unit (DPU).
SEISS will provide unprecedented space radiation monitoring, will provide enhanced
space radiation data to drive the solar radiation storm portion of the NOAA space
weather scales and other space radiation alerts and warnings, and will significantly
improve energetic particle forecasts.
